Car window tinting offers several benefits, from privacy to protection. Many newer cars are manufactured with tinting, but if your vehicle doesn’t come with this feature, you can have it custom-installed by an expert company such as Bi-State Glass Coatings in Granite City, IL. This glass team has served the greater St. Louis area for more than 30 years—here, they answer four frequently asked questions about car window tinting.

4 Car Window Tinting FAQ Answered

What Are the Benefits?

Tinting acts as a sunblock, helping to shield your car from both UV rays and glare, which can make it difficult to see while driving. Exposure to the sun’s UV rays can increase the risk of skin cancer, and excess sunlight can also fade your vehicle’s interior. Window tinting also provides privacy and security; other drivers and passersby cannot see clearly into a car with tinted windows, making the risk of theft lower.

Is Tinting on the Outside or Inside?

Technicians apply tinting to the inside of the glass. The technician lays film on the outside of the window to measure and cut the tint—then, they lay the film and install it on the interior.

How Do You Clean Tinted Windows?

You’ll need to wait a few days after the tint is applied before you can clean the windows—otherwise, the film may loosen. When you do wash them, avoid any cleaners with ammonia. Use a soft paper towel and an ammonia-free cleaner with an alternative cleaning agent, such as diluted vinegar or citrus. You can also use a mild mixture of soap and water.

You’ll need to keep the windows up for about four days after the tint is applied. The film takes two to four days to cure, so rolling the windows down before that may cause it to peel.
