New HVAC equipment for the home can make a huge difference in both your comfort and the heating and cooling bills. When you’re getting ready to add a new furnace or air conditioner, it’s important to do it right to save both yourself and the contractor time and expense. Here are a few tips to prepare for a heating or air conditioning installation so you can get the job done quickly and easily.

Do:

Choose the right contractor.

When you’re looking for an HVAC contractor, do the homework on each provider. Check that they’re fully licensed and insured and look for recommendations or reviews which will give you an idea of what working with that company will be like.

Choose the right equipment.

Well before the installation date, meet with a contractor to discuss the home’s heating and cooling needs. Ask for their recommendations regarding the size of the system you should choose and select a brand you’re comfortable trusting.

Clear the area.

HVACFurnaces and air conditioners are heavy appliances and can be difficult to carry. Make sure you’ve got a clear path from the door to the point of installation, and that the area where the HVAC equipment will be installed has enough clear space for a contractor to lay out tools and parts.

Don’t:

Leave your ducts dirty.

If your new furnace or air conditioner is being connected to existing ductwork, make sure the ducts are cleaned out in advance. Otherwise, the new system will be blowing the same old dust into your home—and might wear out faster than normal if too much continues to circulate.

Let children and pets interfere.

On the day of the HVAC installation, make sure small children and pets will be out of the contractor’s way. Arrange for them to stay in another room during the installation or have another family member take them out for the day.

Treat an installation as a one and done.

Once the new air conditioner or furnace is installed, talk to your contractor about future maintenance. Most systems should be serviced at least once a year to keep them working smoothly and extend their life spans by years.
