Is your smile not as bright as it once was? You’re not alone. Over time, teeth tend to darken because of coffee, wine, and sugary or acidic foods. Fortunately, your dentist can give you professional teeth whitening to remove stains and restore the brightness of your smile. But once you’ve had your teeth professionally whitened, there are some do’s and don’ts of aftercare that will keep your smile beautiful.

Do:

Continue dental hygiene.

dentistAfter having your teeth whitened by your dentist, continue to practice good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing your teeth daily. This will help your results last longer. Avoid colored mouthwash and toothpaste for 24 hours after whitening treatment. Another helpful habit is rinsing your mouth with water after you eat to wash away any leftover food particles.

Use a straw.

Avoid teeth-staining beverages for a few days after whitening treatment. If you do have them, use a straw to help reduce the liquid’s contact with your teeth.

Don’t:

Smoke cigarettes.

Whether you have the occasional social cigarette or you’re a daily smoker, you should plan to avoid smoking for at least 24 hours after treatment. Smoking right after having teeth whitened will stain the enamel and ruin your results.

Drink or eat acidic or dark-colored items.

Avoid drinking black coffee, red wine, dark sodas, and acidic drinks like citrus or tomato juices for several days after treatment. Foods like red sauce, chocolate, blueberries, and soy sauce should also be avoided. If you do eat or drink anything acidic, brush your teeth or rinse your mouth afterward.
