Going to a coin dealer is fun, educational, and can even be a profitable experience. Whether you want to sell a family heirloom or have your latest find appraised the professionals at Coins Plus can help. However, according to Brad Karoleff of Coins Plus in Cincinnati, OH, there are a few steps you should take before your visit.

How to Prepare for Your First Visit to a Coin Dealer

1. Know Your Dealer

Every coin dealer has differing abilities and expertise.  You should check to make sure the dealer you are considering is qualified to assist you.  Make sure they have a good reputation.  We, here at Coins Plus, are members of the Professional Numismatists Guild (PNG.com), the most respected dealer organization in numismatics.  You should also take the time to call and talk to them to make sure they are responsive to your needs.

Just because your coin dealer is knowledgeable does not mean you should be uninformed.  You should ask as many questions as you need to feel comfortable with your dealer.  If they do not like answering questions there may be an underlying reason.

3. Gather Your Pieces

Once you feel comfortable with your dealer make an appointment to see them in their store.  Look around for evidence they are involved in the hobby/business.  If the only thing on the wall is a generic certificate you may want to do more research.   Mr. Karoleff advises novice collectors to NEVER clean their coins. Cleaning, he warns, damages the coins and significantly reduces their value.
