BPA, or bisphenol A, is an industrial chemical used to manufacture many plastic products since the 1960s. Commonly used in polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins, BPA is a component in items like food containers, water bottles, and bottle tops. Because of some findings, many people worry that BPA is harmful to their health, but more recent research might put their minds at ease.

Understanding BPA in Plastic Products

How Much Risk Is There?

According to the EPA and Mayo Clinic, food packaging made from plastic products poses the most threat to consumers, but studies show there is little concern for negative health effects because those products contain such low doses of BPA. An adult would need to consume around 1,300 pounds of food or drink exposed to polycarbonate on a daily basis to ingest dangerous levels of BPA. However, because not all researchers have been able to reproduce the same results, some authorities have taken precautionary measures to prohibit BPA in plastic products like baby bottles.

Are Baby Bottles Safe?

To err on the side of caution, however, the Food and Drug Administration banned BPA  in some plastic bottles and food packaging in 2012. Most manufacturers no longer use BPA in baby bottles or sippy cups as a result. Concerned parents are urged to use baby bottles specifically labeled BPA-free. Alternatives such as glass and stainless steel are also available.
