From a growing belly to swollen ankles, pregnancy brings many changes to a woman’s body. Many people don’t realize that the hormones during this time can also impact oral health. This makes conscientious dental care all the more important when you are carrying a child.

How Pregnancy Impacts Dental Health

1. Increased Odds of Gingivitis

dental careHormones related to pregnancy increase the odds of swollen gums, leading to “pregnancy gingivitis.” You may notice that your gums are more tender than usual and bleed when you floss. Get a soft-bristle toothbrush if you don’t already have one and continue your usual dental care routine of brushing and flossing at home. Your dentist may recommend more frequent teeth cleanings, since swelling makes it easier for bits of food to get stuck and plaque to grow.

2. Risk of Decay

Hormonal changes during pregnancy will likely impact your appetite. You may find yourself snacking more than usual or craving strange foods that you wouldn’t normally indulge in. Constant eating during the day allows bits of food to stay put on your teeth, attracting cavity-causing bacteria. Risk of decay is also greater due to morning sickness, as stomach acids wear down the protective enamel on your teeth. Swish with a mixture of one teaspoon baking soda and one cup water after getting sick to help neutralize the acid.

3. A Possibility of Pregnancy Tumors

Finally, those pesky hormones can also lead to so-called pregnancy tumors—tiny red-colored growths between the teeth. The name can be confusing, as these are not cancerous. They usually don’t cause any issues and will simply disappear after your baby has arrived. If they do cause you discomfort, talk to your dentist about having them removed.
