People living with Parkinson’s disease face several sleep-related side effects. Fatigue and other consequences directly impact quality of life, which is why you need to find a sleep schedule that works for you. The volunteers at Connecticut Advocates for Parkinson’s  – serving all of Connecticut –  are committed to helping people living with Parkinson’s live healthy and want to share a few tips for coping with sleep issues. This can have a profound impact on your overall well-being, so consider these points.

How to Combat Parkinson’s-Related Sleep Issues

1. Stick to a Schedule

When it comes to sleep, your body requires a schedule. To avoid Parkinson’s-related issues, establish one that works for you and stick to it. Rise time and bedtime should always be the same to set your “internal clock,” so you’ll fall asleep easier and wake naturally. This will also reduce waking up in the middle of the night.

2. Avoid Stimulants

Stimulants throw your body off its cycle by keeping it awake and active. To prevent this, avoid coffee, tobacco, and sugar at least eight hours before your regular bedtime. Also, avoid drinking too much alcohol, as it will make you wake up more throughout the night.

3. Exercise

By properly preparing yourself mentally and physically each day, you can drastically decrease sleep issues related to Parkinson’s disease.
