Boating season is here, and it’s time to review the basic rules of marina etiquette before you head out to the water. Marinas are crowded with all kinds of boats, and space can be tight getting in and out of slips or docking for fuel and supplies. Here, the boating experts at McMillan Marine in Rochester, NY, share the top rules of etiquette to observe at your marina.

Basic Courtesies to Follow at the Marina

1. Obey Speed & No Wake Zones

You may be in a hurry to get to the water, but observe the speed or no wake zones in place at your marina. With a variety of crafts entering and exiting the marina, from kayaks to big powerboats, you want to respect everyone’s presence on the water. Keeping speed down decreases the risk of collision and other accidents. Small crafts will thank you!

2. Don’t Hog the Fuel Dock

Be efficient when fueling your boat and getting groceries or fishing supplies. The fuel dock is one of the busiest locations in the marina and other boats may have to circle while they wait for you, causing more congestion and potential for collision.

3. Be Polite & Organized in Your Slip

boatsA marina slip and dock are spaces to share with fellow boaters. Keeping your lines, cords, and gear stowed on your boat reduces trip hazards. If possible, don’t let your bow and anchor extend over the dock. Use spring lines to position your boat safely within the slip. Also, don’t keep food or garbage in your cockpit. It will attract pests like rats, birds, and roaches, which can affect you and other boats adversely and lead to potential infestations in the marina.

4. Don’t Board Another Boat Without Permission

This is a clear rule at any marina. Unless there is an obvious emergency, such as a drifting boat or fire, do not board another vessel without the captain or owner’s permission.

5. Use Your Holding Tank

Obey no discharge rules while in the marina. The discharge zone for sewage in the US is 3 miles offshore. If you don’t have a holding tank, use marina facilities. Help keep the water in your marina as clean as possible by not adding raw sewage to the mix—it is illegal and unhealthy to do so.
