Fire extinguishers are your first line of defense against fires in your home. Keeping yours in good shape will potentially prevent a small problem from becoming a devastating situation. Here are a few basics to knowing when to replace your fire extinguishers.

Ways to Know You Need to Replace Fire Extinguishers

1. Broken Components

Look for cracks, rips, missing parts, or unstable components. If hoses and nozzles are broken or the locking pin is missing, do not rely on it to help you in an emergency. Broken handles, dirty or blocked components, and loose or sticking pieces will also cause issues if you need to put out a fire.

2. Life Span

Fire extinguishers can last anywhere from 5 to 15 years. Check the label on the unit or look up the manufacturer’s information to see its projected life span. If the model is nearing the end of its life or you aren’t sure how long you’ve had it, replace it.

3. Inspection Sticker

4. Pressure Gauge

If you rent your fire extinguisher and don’t have any information on its age or service history, check the pressure gauge every month. Needles in the green are safe for use, but any other colors are not. Older models without gauges should be assessed by an expert to determine if their contents are still usable.
