Garbage disposals offer a tidy, easy-to-use place to send your kitchen leftovers. The device churns up particles and conveniently flushes them down your plumbing. When you notice your system is leaking from the bottom, a few things could be causing the problem. Here are three things to watch for in your inspection.

Why Is Your Garbage Disposal Leaking From the Bottom?

1. Broken Seal

Over time, internal seals inside the garbage disposal will wear down. When the leak is low and seeping out the bottom, most likely a seal has broken or is so worn out it can’t do its job anymore. It is possible to repair a broken seal, but your best option is to purchase a new garbage disposal. If the device is relatively new—under five years old—it may still be under warranty.

2. Dishwasher Drain Pipe

Some disposals attach to a drain pipe in your dishwasher that filters food particles from dishware and utensils as they are washed. If the hose connecting the equipment is compromised or the clamp has become loose, you may see leaks down below. A simple tightening or a new hose will remedy the trouble.

3. Discharge Pipe

Any of those parts can become loose or weakened with repeated use. If tightening each piece doesn’t solve the problem, you may need to replace each component. Locate where the water is coming from to see if you can narrow down the deteriorating part. If the actual pipe is the problem, call your plumber to help with repairs.
