Spring is here, which means you may be stocking up on the tissues and medications from the local pharmacy. If you struggle with seasonal allergies, you know how frustrating dealing with symptoms like itchy eyes, runny nose, and incessant sneezing can be. Fortunately, there are ways to cope a bit better during the spring.

How to Make It Through Allergy Season

1. Avoid Peak Allergy Hours

Though it may seem limiting, planning your day around peak allergy hours can minimize your symptoms. The pollen count is highest typically between the hours of 5:00 and 10:00 a.m., so if you can, stay indoors during that time. Hot, dry days also have higher levels of pollen activity than more humid days do.

2. Start Treatment Early

Visit your local pharmacy to stock up on allergy medications a couple of weeks before allergy season hits. Start taking antihistamines and using nasal sprays before springtime pollen activity, since this can help reduce and prevent inflammation and ease symptoms ahead of time. Immunotherapy, or allergy shots, is another excellent pre-treatment option, but it will require you to start several months prior to allergy season. Check with your pharmacy to see what medications and solutions they offer for you to get a head start on allergy season.

3. Deal With Pollen

pharmacyIt’s nice to open the windows when the weather is warm. However, you’ll be allowing loads of pollen and other allergens to make their way into your house, worsening your allergy symptoms. Instead, keep doors and windows closed as much as possible. Spring cleaning is also a helpful way to remove allergens that have already accumulated, so focus on cleaning areas such as upholstery, carpeting, rugs, fabrics, and air filters. Also, change out of clothes you’ve worn outside as soon as you arrive home, since allergens can easily stick to your clothing.
