Studying for the SAT takes discipline and focus, but it’s not easy when surrounded by distractions. From parents just “checking in” to texts and app notifications, it’s entirely too easy to get sidetrack. To make the most of your SAT prep time, here are the top 5 distractions to avoid while studying.

Distractions to Avoid While Studying for the SAT or ACT

1. Noisy Environment

Whether it’s people talking or a TV show, it’s easy to get distracted by background noise. If you can, study somewhere quiet, like the library. If you have to work in a noisy environment, wear headphones and listen to some classical music or find a white noise app to drown out other sounds.

2. Unnecessary Interruptions

Studying at home may be convenient, but there are a lot of potential interruptions from parents and siblings. Keep a schedule so everyone knows not to interrupt you during those times. Other interruptions can come from being unprepared. Gather everything you’ll need for your study session in one place so you don’t have to stop and find an item.

sat3. Technology

Speaking of unnecessary interruptions, technology is probably the biggest culprit. Turn your phone off (or at least turn on the “do not disturb” feature) and put it in another room to avoid temptation. You shouldn’t need your computer for SAT or ACT prep, but if you do, use an app that blocks distracting sites so you stay focused. Much of your SAT or ACT studying should be technology-free, however, so make use of flashcards and write out your notes and answers to practice questions in a notebook.

4. Friends

It’s tempting to study with friends, but unless they’re also disciplined, they may be more of a distraction than an aid. When studying for the SAT or ACT, it’s usually best to study alone or with a tutor than with a few friends. You’ll accomplish more and retain the material better.

5. Physical Needs

This is another distraction that comes from lack of preparation. You sit down to study, and five to 10 minutes later you realize you’re thirsty, hungry, or have to use the restroom. Anticipate these needs in advance to avoid unnecessary breaks. Get a bottle of water and a snack before studying. Bring a sweatshirt you can throw on if you get cold and always use the restroom first.
