There are a few pieces of knowledge that can really get you out of a bind while on the road, and knowing how to change a flat tire is chief among them. While you could always call roadside assistance when a tire blows, understanding how to do it yourself will save you time and money. If you find yourself in this position, keep the following steps in mind so you can get your car back on the road.

How to Change a Flat Tire

What Tools Do I Need?

There are a few essential tools you should have in your vehicle at all times. In addition to the spare tire, which should always be properly inflated, you'll want to stock your car with wheel wedges, a lug wrench, a jack, and a tire repair kit. Since you never know when the flat will happen, have a working flashlight on hand. Before you get started, you should also make sure the area around you is secure. This is where flares and reflective triangles come in handy. Placing them behind your vehicle will let approaching drivers know to exercise caution when passing.

tiresWhat Steps Should I Take?

Once you and your vehicle are in a safe location with reflectors out and tools at the ready, you can get to work. Put wheel wedges against the opposite tires to keep your vehicle in place, and remove the wheel cover or hubcap to expose the lug nuts. Use the lug wrench to loosen them, then get the jack into position beneath your car. The method of placement may vary depending on the car's make and model, so make sure you know where to put it and how to use the jack.

Now you can fully unscrew the lug nuts and swap your flat tire out for the spare. Once you have it properly aligned with the exposed bolts, simply push the spare into place and perform a light hand-tightening on the lug nuts. Exercise great caution when lowering the jack, and wait until the car is back on the ground to fully tighten the lug nuts. With your spare on and your flat carefully stowed, double-check your spare's air pressure and take your vehicle to an auto shop.
