While it may seem odd to wear sunglasses indoors at first, people typically have a good reason for sporting shades inside. Sometimes, it’s simply a fashion statement. Many people, however, have medical reasons that make wearing sunglasses inside an essential part of their eye care. Sensitivity to bright light, also known as photophobia, can be brought on by a number of different conditions.

Reasons Someone Might Wear Sunglasses Indoors

1. Migraine

Sensitivity to light is a common symptom of migraines. Additionally, bright lights can trigger a migraine in some people. For those who can’t nap in a dark room until their symptoms subside, they may need to don their sunglasses to get through the rest of their day.

2. Dry Eyes

sunglassesDry eyes is a common cause of photophobia. As the eyes dry out, the lack of moisture and lubrication on the corneas makes them more sensitive to bright light. While dry eyes is easily treated with eye drops from an optometrist, throwing on a pair of shades can help until the drops are available.

3. Brain Injury

Head injuries like concussions have a myriad of symptoms, and the severity can vary greatly from person to person. Many experience photophobia, but the sensitivity is usually temporary. It may last for a few weeks up to six months or more. Shielding the eyes from bright lights can alleviate the pain and irritation until the sensitivity abates.

4. Eye Exam

At most eye exams, the optometrist dilates the patients’ eyes. This process allows them to better examine the retina and check for signs of disease. Dilated eyes are sensitive to light, so most optometrists recommend wearing sunglasses both indoors and out for the rest of the day.

5. Concealment

In some cases, sunglasses are merely there to conceal red, irritated eyes or other unsightly eye conditions such as pterygium or pinguecula, which are small, painful growths on the eye.
