Kahuku Farms is at the forefront of Oahu’s farm-to-table movement. Not only have they provided the North Shore with delicious, fresh produce for over 100 years, but they also go out of their way to teach locals about sustainable agriculture. Here, the farmers discuss one way they accomplish the latter: hydroponic kits.

A Guide to Hydroponics

What Is Hydroponics?

Hydroponics is a growing method that involves suspending plants’ roots in a water-nutrient solution rather than soil. It works for a variety of plants including pak choi, basil, green onion and, most popularly, lettuce.

Kahuku Farms Static Hydroponic system is highly sustainable because the plants are already in a nutrient-rich solution, so no additional watering or fertilizing is needed. The system also doesn’t require any electricity to grow or maintain. Lastly, plants are above-ground, so pests are less likely to damage them.

Is Hydroponic Gardening Easy?

hydroponicsYou don’t have to be a farmer to enjoy hydroponic gardening; anyone can do it! All you need is one of Kahuku Farm’s hydroponic kits and some space in your yard or on your lanai. Each standard kit contains six net pots, six lettuce seedlings, and six-gallon units of nutrient mix. The deluxe kit also comes with a grow base — a large container with a pre-drilled foam top.

Simply combine the nutrients with water and add to your container as directed. Next, transplant the seedlings into the grow base, making sure the roots reach the water. Do this in the early morning or late evening; the plants will adjust more quickly in a cooler environment. Your lettuce will then be ready to harvest in just three to five weeks.

How Can Hydroponic Gardening Benefit Your Home?

Hydroponic kits are a great addition to any home. Not only do they help you grow your own farm-fresh produce, but they also help you interact with the natural world, all from the comfort of your lanai. Hydroponic kits are also a fun, hands-on way to teach kids about both farming and nutrition. Lastly, hydroponics is perfect for aspiring or novice gardeners who need a low maintenance crop.
