If your eczema symptoms haven’t improved with topical treatments, you may want to give phototherapy, also known as light therapy, a chance. The treatment uses ultraviolet light to treat the rash and itching associated with the skin condition. The UV light suppresses an overactive immune system that leads to inflammation. The dermatologists at the office of Lauren A. Daman, MD, PC, in Hartford, CT, provide further insight on phototherapy for eczema.

Types of Phototherapy

Narrowband ultraviolet B (UVB) light is the most common type of phototherapy used for eczema. It releases UVB light, which is known to induce a longer period of clear skin. Other types of light therapy include broadband UVB photoherapy and UVA (ultraviolet A) phototherapy.

What to Expect

phototherapyWhen you arrive at a light therapy session, you will be asked to dress down to your undergarments, apply a moisturizing oil to your skin, and put on protective goggles. You will then stand in the phototherapy machine for less than a minute. If you only need to treat a small section of your body, like your palms or soles, you may be able to only put your hands or feet in the machine.

Side Effects of Phototherapy

Like with most other treatments, phototherapy does come with side effects. The most common include redness and dry and itchy skin. Fortunately, they are generally temporary and can be relieved with moisturizers.

Frequency of Treatments

The frequency of your light therapy treatments will depend on the type of ultraviolet light that’s used. Procedures that use UVB are typically given two to three times a week while those that use UVA are administered twice a week. Both of these therapies last for about three months.
