With Missouri’s sometimes-unpredictable weather, it’s a good idea to have a storm shelter to retreat to when the wind picks up. Sturdy construction is the most important feature of a shelter—but once you’re safe in that regard, you’ll also want the right supplies to help you weather the storm. Here are a few items you should use to stock your shelter in advance.

What to Put in Your Storm Shelter

Storm Shelter1. Flashlight

Even if your storm shelter is wired with lights of its own, heavy weather has a nasty habit of knocking out electrical supplies. Keeping at least one flashlight with fresh batteries in your shelter will ensure you never have to sit in the dark.

2. Water & Food

This doesn’t have to be a huge supply of emergency food; even some basic snacks and bottled water will help you during long storm shelter stays. Pick some of your favorite foods with a decent shelf life and don’t forget to replace them regularly so they’re fresh.

3. Clothes & Blankets

Depending on the weather, it may get cold in your shelter. Some warm clothes and blankets will help you stay comfortable—and as a bonus, they can double as bedding if you need a nap.

4. First Aid Kit

Accidents happen, particularly when you’re preoccupied with getting to a safe area. A first aid kit can help you deal with any scrapes, bruises, or minor ailments while waiting for the weather to die down.

5. Electronics

A reliable weather radio is a must-have for your storm shelter so you can stay updated on conditions outside. Ideally, you should also have a charger cable and power source for your phone in case you need to call out.
