When you visit the dentist for a basic checkup, you can expect the same general procedures at almost any office. You’re there for two reasons: to receive a detailed, professional teeth cleaning and to have the dentist look for any signs of decay or other problems. To accomplish these goals, there are three parts to a routine visit.

Steps of a Dentist Visit

1. X-Rays

DentistBefore you sit down in the hygienist’s chair, you will usually receive a dental X-ray. This process helps identify problems between your teeth or in the tooth roots and jawbone—areas which can’t be inspected visually. Based on your X-ray results and the visual examination, your dentist may recommend treatment for any problems identified.

2. Cleaning

Most of the time, dental cleanings are handled by the hygienist rather than by your dentist. Your teeth will be brushed, flossed, and rinsed to remove plaque from the surface of your enamel. Your hygienist will then examine your teeth for tough tartar deposits and will scour them away. You may also receive a general tooth polishing if needed to smooth the surface of the enamel and discourage dental decay.

3. Exam

Some initial stages of your dental exam are completed by your hygienist during your cleaning, who will then pass their observations to the dentist. Your dentist will examine your mouth in detail, using lights and small mirrors to get a clear, unobstructed look at every visible tooth surface. During this process, your dentist will also probe your teeth with a small implement to test for potential cavities and other problems.
