Your air conditioner has been sitting neglected all winter, so even if it’s in good shape, it could use a little attention before coaxing it back into full-time summer operation. What steps should you take before cranking up the air? Below, Inman Heating & Cooling in Columbia, IL, shares what you should do with your system before summer hits.

What to Do Before Turning on Your Air Conditioner

1. Perform an Inspection

Take a walk around your home to the outside unit, also known as the condenser. If you use a protective cover during the winter, remove it and visually inspect the system. Clear away winter debris, such as dead leaves and trash, and trim back the creeping spring vegetation. Also, make sure your condenser is switched on at the exterior disconnect box.

2. Change Filters

Air ConditioningOnce you’re back inside, check your air filters. Filters that are caked with dust and debris won’t allow for the easy passage of air and can strain your air conditioner, causing it to wear out. Change the filter every 90 days, or once every two months if you have a dog or cat.

3. Adjust Airflow

During the winter, you’ll want the furnace blowing warm air into the lower regions of your home while the sun warms the upper levels. But during the summer, the lower levels will already be cooler and won’t need that much airflow. Adjust your vents to allow more air from your air conditioning to cool the spaces that bear the brunt of the sun’s heat.
