This week is National Men’s Health Week so listen up fellas. You may have all the muscles in the world or the know-how to make it as a business leader, but that doesn’t make you immune to dental health problems! Seeing blood in the sink after you brush is not normal. You may be developing gum disease. All the muscles in the world can’t help you here.

Did you know that by just being born a male you are less likely to partake in proper oral health care. Many men only come to see Dr. Joy Lunan when a problem arises.

Men are more at risk to develop oral cancer. If you are a man that chews or smokes tobacco products the likelihood that you will face serious oral health issues escalates exponentially.

Studies show women have a better attitude about seeing their dentist. They present with less plaque build up and bleeding during regular check ups, which indicate early stages of gum disease.

While not all men skip dental appointments and many do take their oral health seriously, men are genetically predisposed to gum disease and oral cancer. Take this as a friendly reminder that avoiding serious illness starts with minimizing risks. These risks include smoking and chewing tobacco, disease including diabetes, certain medications, defective fillings, ill-fitting crowns and bridges, misaligned teeth.

Men are more likely to skip brushing and flossing after meals than women. This immediately puts men at risk for decay. If you are taking certain medications men will be at an even higher risk than women party because of their genetics and partly because some medications cause dry mouth. If saliva isn’t there to help wash away food particles and neutralize acids you are more likely to develop decay.

Try to drink more water, avoid alcohol and smoking, and stay away from caffeine and sugary foods. Chewing sugarless gum is also a good idea.

Dr. Lunan will also do an oral cancer screening at your dental visits with her. This disease is easy to beat if caught early and she is trained to spot the signs.

Both men and women responding to a survey in 2015 stated that a nice smile was a person’s most attractive feature. In addition, only 66% of men said they brush their teeth twice a day compared to 86% of women. Come on guys – it’s time to start taking care of that smile! It’s not only good for your appearance, it’s good for your overall health. Start today by scheduling a dental appointment with Dr. Joy Lunan of the Middlebury, CT area. You won’t regret it.(203)598-7920  www.middleburydentist.com
