5 Tips for Throwing Away Surplus Items, Northeast Dallas, Texas

Sometimes we accumulate a lot of stuff without even realizing it. Before you know it, every closet and shelf is piled high with clothing, books, toys, and knickknacks. While some items are easy to toss, others may be more difficult to part with—even if they are unnecessary. Here are a few tips for throwing away all of those unwanted items today and clearing out your living space.

How to Clear out Unwanted Items

1. Regular Schedule

Try to set a regular schedule when purging unwanted items. As little as 10 minutes a day can do wonders for your clutter, helping you clear away junk mail, old receipts, and other piles that grow rather quickly. Whenever you buy something new, get rid of its older counterpart and set aside a day each month to donate clothing you no longer wear or need.

2. Divide & Conquer

Make three piles: “yes”, “no”, and “maybe”. Get rid of the “no” pile right away and either donate it to charity, toss it in the garbage or recycling, or return it to the store from which it came. You can also sell stuff at garage sales or on online auctions and sale sites. For the “maybe” group, give yourself one month to decide if they are necessary. If you don’t use the items in that time, you probably don’t need them.

3. Old Magazines & Newspapers

The news stories and articles will also be outdated. If there are columns you do want, clip those and toss the rest. Place articles you want to save in a neat binder with plastic sleeves to preserve them.

4. Go Digital

Instead of keeping a stack of documents, receipts, and old tax filings, scan everything onto a laptop or digital storage space and toss the hard copies. This will allow you to keep financial papers you may need without the clutter. Shred and toss documents more than three years old.

5. Medicine Cabinet

There is no reason to hold onto old medication. Not only does it take up space, but it is also dangerous if accidentally ingested. Toss expired pills, both prescription and over-the-counter varieties. While you are in there, throw away any old makeup, creams, and other toiletries that have been sitting untouched for more than a year.
