Protecting your child’s baby teeth lays the groundwork for a beautiful and healthy smile that will last them a lifetime. In addition to teaching your little one good dental care habits, help keep their teeth intact by getting them sealants. These are best applied as soon as their permanent molars come in, usually between ages 6 and 12.

What Are Dental Sealants?

dental careDental sealants are designed to protect teeth from bacteria and acids that promote cavities. They consist of a very thin plastic material, which is installed on the tops of the back teeth. The ridged and grooved surfaces of these teeth are difficult to clean with basic dental care, which makes them more likely to decay. By serving as a protective layer, sealants offer extra protection against cavity-causing bacteria.

How Dental Sealants Are Applied

Once your child’s permanent molars erupt, talk to your dental care professional about sealants. These can be applied in a single sitting, quickly and painlessly. First, the teeth are thoroughly cleaned and dried, then coated with a special gel. Sealants, usually made of resin, are spread over the teeth after. The resin can be white, clear, or tinted to match the tooth. You won’t notice any difference when your child laughs or talks since only the back teeth are affected. Sealants hold for anywhere from five to ten years. Your dentist will let you know when it’s time for new ones.
