Moving to a new home can be a stressful time for your pet. They aren’t equipped to understand the rush of activity or the sudden change of scenery. Fortunately, you can make the process easier on them by preparing them for the big day.

How to Get Your Dog or Cat Ready for a Move

1. Practice & Training

You may not be able to practice a full move with your pet, but you can acclimate them to the parts that affect them. For instance, your pet may need to be picked up and handled, travel some distance in a car, and be kept crated for some or all of the journey—so try introducing these factors gently ahead of the move. Leave their crate where they can enter and exit it freely. Take them out to the car, then drive around the neighborhood. Don’t forget to reward them with treats!

2. Supplies

The day of your move, you want to make sure your pet will have everything they need to be comfortable in their new home. Their bed, favorite piece of furniture, or familiar bedding is a must, as is their usual food in their usual dish. You should also have their favorite toys on hand, and take some time to play with them in your new home to help them settle in.

3. Vet Appointment

MovingBefore moving, take your pet to the vet. Make sure they’re caught up on any necessary treatments and vaccinations. If this is a long-distance move, get your pet’s paperwork together to prove they’re yours and up to date on vaccines. Also, talk to your vet about any medications your pet is on and about solutions for anxiety and carsickness.
