Children thrive on fresh air and burning energy in outdoor play. Rainy days do happen, however, and keeping kids entertained when they are stuck inside may seem difficult. To take the stress out of inclement weather days, here are a few fun and educational activities to try with your preschool age child.

Fun Ideas for Children on Rainy Days

1. Collages

Grab construction paper or paper plates and give your child an assortment of items to glue for a collage. Buttons, popsicle sticks, tissue paper, magazine clippings, cotton balls, and anything with exciting textures or colors can be included.

2. Cooking

preschoolGet your kids involved in the kitchen with easy cooking and baking recipes. Let them make lunch with you or have them crack eggs and stir the batter for delicious cookies. Help them measure out ingredients, and include them in the cleanup afterward.

3. Dance It Out

Pick your favorite songs and choreograph a new dance. Each dancer creates an eight-count and teaches the others, and after a few minutes, you will have a brand new dance to perform. This also burns energy and keeps everyone active when trapped inside during a storm.

4. Tracing Shapes

Select an array of objects around the house and have children trace them. Once they are all set, color and decorate them. You can even cut out the shapes and create a geometric mobile.

5. Sorting

In an ice cube tray or muffin tin, mix up different items like beads, buttons, and coins, and ask your little ones to sort them into their own section. Not only will this keep preschool kids busy, but it will also help them practice their cognitive and fine motor skills.
