Regardless of age, many kids have difficulty learning math. As a parent of prekindergarten children, there are steps you can take to make the subject more fun and accessible. Starting early by showing its presence in everyday life will make them more successful later in their academic career and beyond.

How to Incorporate Math Into Daily Life

1. Play Games on Road Trips

Road trips—even short ones—are perfect for practicing math. Have your child read the numbers on speed limit signs, mile markers, and any other highway boards. You can incorporate other learning opportunities by having them count the number of blue cars they see versus how many red vehicles they spot.

2. Grocery Shop Together

Your little one may not be ready to calculate sales tax, but they can contribute in other ways during grocery excursions. Have them count out the number of apples or other produce you need. This is also the perfect opportunity for them to learn how to read price tags.

3. Practice While You Cook

pre-kindergartenFractions may be too advanced for little ones in prekindergarten, but there are plenty of ways to begin introducing them to simpler concepts. When preparing a meal together, have them count the total number of ingredients needed or get the right amount of eggs from the carton.

4. Hit the Books

The library may not be the first place that comes to mind when thinking about numbers, but the Dewey decimal system gives kids the chance to practice numerals and learn about organization, too. Teach them how to search for and find their favorite books, then look for fun reads about math and numbers.

5. Look for Numbers Everywhere

Remember that numbers are everywhere. You can make almost any everyday activity into a game. Whether you’re counting the animals at the zoo, Halloween candy, or how many apples you picked from a tree, getting your little ones acclimated to the subject ensures they feel secure when learning more on the topic at school.
