According to Bloom Beauty Lounge, an elite hair salon in NYC’s Chelsea neighborhood, how you wash your hair can be the difference between a good hair day and a bad one. That’s because improper care is a common cause of both dryness and frizz. But with these stylist-approved tips, you can rock that curly hairstyle without fear of flyaways.

How to Control Frizz After Showering

1. Shampoo Less Frequently

curly hairstylesFrequent shampooing strips the hair of its natural oils, making it dry and prone to breakage. To keep your curly hairstyle looking silky smooth, avoid shampooing more then 3 times a week. Instead, opt for something more gentle like a cleansing conditioner so you can refresh your curls daily without compromising the natural oils. Great options are Bloom’s own curly hair cleansing conditioner Lavender & Oak or Kevin Murphy’s Restore.

2. Skip the Towel

Hair is made up of an inner cortex and outer protective layer known as the cuticle. To eliminate frizz, the cuticle’s shingle-like structure must lay flat. Towels, however, cause friction and therefore frizz. After you shower, try using your hands like a squeegee to remove as much water as you can then apply your curly products by pressing and scrunching them into the hair. It's recommended to do this step in the shower then towel off. You'll find that applying your curly products on very wet hair will significantly reduce the amount of frizz once dry. If you prefer to towel dry then try wrapping your hair in an old cotton t-shirt or microfiber cloth instead. Rinsing your locks with cool water will also seal the cuticle and help the strands lay flat.

3. Opt for Air-Drying

Like towels, blow-dryers cause unnecessary friction and flyaways. That’s why Bloom Beauty Lounge recommends air-drying your hair whenever possible. If you have to use a blow-dryer, a diffuser attachment will reduce friction and keep your curly hairstyle looking sleek and shiny. Make sure the airflow it is blowing down the hair-shaft and not up.

4. Reduce Heat Styling

Blow-dryers aren’t the only styling tool that cause frizz. Straighteners and curling irons do too. To protect your locks, limit heat styling as much as possible. When you do use these tools, remember to use a heat protectant spray to shield hair cuticles and lock in moisture.

5. Use Frizz-Fighting Products

Smoothing treatments can be a great way to both style your tresses and reduce frizz but opt for a formaldehyde free version. Make sure you’re using shampoo's that won’t strip your hair and instead opt for a cleansing conditioner or amino acid based shampoo. Bloom Beauty Lounge’s organic hair products, for example are sulfate, petrochemical, and paraben free, so your curls stay soft, weightless, and frizz-free.
