Separation

The different types of fuel present in the gas and oil mixture each have a different molecule structure, which means each one has a different weight and density. Because of this, propane and other gasses can be separated much like oil and water.

First, a “wet gas” mixture containing gasoline, methane, butane, isobutane, and propane is separated from the crude oil. The “wet gas” is then combined with an absorbing oil that helps to further separate the mixture, and is distilled into its distinct parts.

Quality Control

There are very strict standards regarding the purity of propane that can be sold as a fuel. First, it must become liquid at a relatively low pressure. Impurities in the gas interfere with the liquefaction process and must be removed to achieve the desired results. The liquid propane is also tested for residue, sulfur content, and corrosivity to a range of materials. If it passes these tests, it’s ready to be sold.
