Most people are familiar with the marshmallow-like, chipper-faced Michelin® Man, the longtime symbol of the famous tire company of the same name. However, they are less likely to know the interesting history of the much-loved manufacturer. It all started with a rubber company ran by André Michelin in Clermont-Ferrand, France, in the late 19th century, and a bicycle in need of repair. Today, you can thank this fine Frenchman for the high-quality, much-beloved Michelin tires found on cars, motorcycles, and planes the world over. With a brief glimpse into the history of this tire manufacturer, you’re likely to uncover some curious and surprising facts.

The History of Michelin Tires

Humble Beginnings

In 1889, a man brought in a pneumatic tire to Michelin’s rubber factory for a repair. At the time, this type of air-filled tire was a recently invented rarity. It took several hours for Michelin to remove and repair the tire, which was glued to the rim. When he finally tested it, though, the tire quickly failed. Rather than feeling discouraged about the setback, Michelin had bigger plans: to create a more functional pneumatic tire. Thus, he enlisted his brother, and the two together created a series of tires that would revolutionize the industry.

Steady Growth

tireThe duo took out a patent for the removable pneumatic tire in 1891, which would soon be used to win the world’s first-ever long-distance bicycle race. In the decades that followed, Michelin oversaw large rubber plantations across Vietnam and invented models like the run-flat tire and the radial tire. It wasn’t until 1968 that Michelin opened its first office in North America, after which the company experienced consistent success that they still observe today.

Contemporary Success

Today, Michelin strives to remain No. 1 in terms of the design, sustainability, and engineering of tires. While the headquarters remain in Clermont-Ferrand, the company now can be found in 170 countries. In 2016, the manufacturer produced more than 187 million tires, which are used for everything from cars to heavy-duty trucks and agricultural equipment.
