When someone you love passes away, it’s difficult to know how to grieve and cope. Whether you’ve been asked to give their eulogy or want to say a few words at their funeral service, you might feel overwhelmed on how to go about it and honor their life. However, with some planning and helpful tips, you’ll be ready to give a wonderful, moving eulogy.

3 Tips for Giving a Eulogy at a Love One’s Funeral Service

1. Take Time to Recall Memories

Before you start writing the eulogy, take some time to reflect on memories you shared with the person, as well as their life experiences. Sit down and watch some of their old home movies or flip through photos of them to spark some meaningful memories you can include in the eulogy. You can even play a slideshow of some of your favorite photos at the funeral service during the eulogy to make it more special.

2. Decide What Kind of Eulogy to Give

If you were extremely close to them, you might want to focus on sharing nostalgic memories, but a life history eulogy can also work to appeal to everyone listening. You can even combine the two types and give an overview of their life while sharing a few of your fondest memories of them.

3. Write It Out & Practice

Plan the speech ahead of time by either preparing notecards or writing it out verbatim. You’ll likely get a bit choked up as you talk about your loved one, so having the speech written out will help if you forget what you had planned to say. Read it in front of the mirror or practice for a friend and get their thoughts. Recite it several times until you feel confident and satisfied with what you plan to say.
