Cavities are physical holes made by oral bacteria living inside your mouth, and they can cause a great deal of discomfort. Fortunately, if you recognize the early signs of dental caries, you can seek treatment from your dentist proactively. Here are three signs you may have a cavity.

Symptoms of Tooth Decay

1. Temperature Sensitivity

After oral bacteria has demineralized your dental enamel, a small lesion can form, which is then replaced with decay. Because cavities are holes in the surface of the tooth, they can collect additional food particles and bacteria, making the problem even worse. Over time, the hole can reach the inner pulp chamber of the tooth, allowing hot and cold foods and drinks to aggravate your nerves. If you experience a stinging sensation when you eat or drink, you may be living with a growing cavity.

2. Toothaches

dentistWhen cavities reach the inner portions of the tooth, they can cause a condition called pulpitis, where the interior of the tooth swells and presses on nerves. When cavities have reached this point, they can cause constant toothaches, which can make it hard to eat, talk, and sleep. To relieve this problem, dentists use procedures like root canals to clear out internal pressure and infections, relieving the pain.

3. Visible Discolorations

Cavities also tend to develop a brown, green, or black appearance, making your teeth look spotty. Check your smile regularly for the signs of tooth decay, and mention areas of concern during your next appointment with your dentist.
