Auto collisions happen every day—even to the safest, most responsible drivers. When it happens, the experience can feel stressful and scary. Amid the rush of adrenaline and shock of the crash, it may be difficult to maintain your composure and think clearly. However, it’s important to remain calm and follow these five key steps right away.

After the Auto Collision: 5 Key Steps to Take

1. Stop the Vehicle

Whatever you do, stop the vehicle. Even if the incident seems minor, it’s illegal to drive away in the event of a collision. If it’s safe to do so, pull over to the shoulder of the road and secure the vehicle.

2. Check Yourself & Others for Injuries

Next, survey yourself and any passengers for injuries. If you see that you’re seriously injured, don’t attempt to get out of your seat—doing so may worsen your condition. Instead, try to remain still until someone can call emergency personnel.

From minor dents to serious crashes, call the police in the event of an accident. When the police arrive, they will complete an accident report and document the scene of the incident. You can explain to the officers what happened, which will impact your insurance situation later on.

4. Exchange Information

You also need to exchange insurance and contact information with other drivers involved in the incident. At a minimum, collect a first and last name, the name of the driver’s insurance company and the policy number, the license plate number, the driver’s license number, and the make and model of the vehicle.

5. Document Information

Next, you need to collect further evidence for insurance purposes. Ask for the police officers’ names and request a copy of the police report. Take photos of the accident, and ask for names of all involved drivers as well as passengers. If possible, take down the names and information of any witnesses.
