Investing in a brand new home is a thrilling experience, even more so when you are building a custom house from the ground up. One of the first and most important steps within this entire process is laying the foundation. That is why the experienced construction team at Homeworks Construction in Honolulu, HI, has shared a guide to the process.

How a Foundation Is Made

constructionThe first step is preparing the ground for the work. An excavation team will come in to test the lot for compaction, level any uneven surfaces, remove natural rocks, stones, or trees, and set batter boards to level the house. This can be a quick or lengthy process depending on the soil type. Lots on Hawaii may prove more difficult if the construction team must work through volcanic rock as well.

Once this is completed and the land is fully cleared, a hydraulic digger is used to dig deep into the soil, creating a hole to contain cement. This must done in a single session, or else the strength of the foundation could be compromised. Pouring concrete over two days, for example, could create a cold joint and lead to cracks. Once in place, this cement must go through a curing process and be kept damp for at least three days to reach its desired strength of 3,000 psi.

Creating a Basement

The steps mentioned above are for homes without basements. When a lower level is desired, the process is slightly different. The footings are placed much deeper and the construction of eight-foot walls is required. These walls surround a four-inch-thick concrete slab that acts as the flooring. These additional steps require much more time, labor, and expense. Even more work will be necessary to install plumbing in the basement.

Building the foundation for your home literally sets up the rest of your custom home construction for success. As such, your construction team must be knowledgeable about the process.
