With summer on its way, you’ll want to make sure your air conditioner is in perfect shape. Regular air conditioning maintenance will keep your unit going strong throughout the season. If you’re unsure of how to take care of your AC, consult the following guide.

How to Maintain Your HVAC System

1. Change or Clean Filters

Dirty filters disrupt air flow and lower the efficiency of your unit. They can also blow dirt, dust, and allergens into your living space. Check your filter monthly to see if it needs replacing, or cleaning if it’s reusable. If you have a window or wall-mounted unit, simply remove the filter, dust it, and rinse with warm, soapy water.

2. Inspect for Blockage

Weak air flow or leakage could be an indication of blockage or clogging. Examine your unit for damaged or stopped up tubes and pumps. Whether you find the culprit or not, have an expert come in to take care of the problem.

3. Tend to the Outside Unit

Grass clippings and dirt can also collect on the surface over time and impede air flow, so clean off any buildup.

4. Check Condenser Coils

Cool air and heat flow through your condenser coils, so make sure there’s no obstruction. The fins of the coils are prone to bending, and the best fix is having them straightened by a service technician. If you notice dirt and dust blocking exterior fins, turn off your unit and gently hose them down. Allow them to dry completely before powering it back on.

5. Call for Professional Maintenance

It’s common for homeowners to miss problems that are harder to detect. Toward the beginning of the season, call a technician for full air conditioning maintenance. They’ll make sure your unit is working at maximum efficiency and make any necessary AC repairs.
