3 Steps for Using Chopsticks When Eating Chinese Food, Fairbanks, Alaska

If you’re looking for an authentic dining experience, you may be tempted to use chopsticks the next time you order delicious Chinese food. Proper technique is crucial in this case, especially when you’re a novice at using these ancient utensils. The following tips will help you wield chopsticks deftly and impress your dining companions.

Your Guide to Eating Chinese Food Properly

1. Don’t Clench

While it may seem counterintuitive, clenching chopsticks tightly can cause you to lose your grip on food. The best approach is to balance one chopstick on your ring finger with the other end resting between your thumb and pointer finger.

2. Add the Second Chopstick

Start by setting it between your thumb and forefinger (as with the first chopstick), but this time let the second chopstick sit on your middle finger. Once in place, grip both with your thumb and pointer and middle fingers.

3. Let Your Fingers Do the Work

The bottom chopstick should be kept still for the most part, while the top chopstick can be manipulated by your middle and index fingers. When in position, practice opening and closing the chopsticks as you would when eating. Remember, a firm (but not tight) grip is key to keeping your food where it belongs. Also, remember that the heavier the food, the harder it will be to pick up.
