Fireworks are a traditional part of summer celebrations in many parts of the country, but they do come with their own dangers. You might assume that your homeowners insurance policy would cover any damage caused by a misfired firework, but this isn’t always the case. Before firing off fireworks this summer, check with your policy provider to make sure you’re covered.

Illegal Activity Isn’t Covered

While homeowners insurance will generally cover fire damage, issues caused by illegal activity is usually excluded. While fireworks are perfectly legal in many states, Nebraska and some other jurisdictions have strict limits on when they can be bought and where they can be used.

homeowners insuranceMunicipal governments often have their own restrictions, so check the local laws before setting off fireworks anywhere near your house. Your homeowners insurance carrier may have additional exclusions, so ask an agent about your provider’s policies.

Use Fireworks Safely

Even if your homeowners insurance policy covers firework damage, taking some safety steps beforehand can prevent this damage from occurring in the first place. Always light just one firework at a time, and make sure you set them off in a clear area with no brush nearby.

Make sure all fireworks are pointed away from buildings, people, and vehicles, and always keep a bucket of water nearby. Finally, wet down used fireworks and throw them out in a metal trashcan far away from your house.
