After a long winter, your lawn mower has had plenty of time to sit and become uncooperative. However, unless the lawn equipment is too old and worn out, there is likely a way to repair it. There are some simple troubleshooting methods you can try to get the mower back in operation. Below is a handy list of common reasons for mower malfunctions.

3 Common Reasons Your Lawn Mower Isn’t Working

1. Dead Battery

Lawn mower batteries have an average lifespan of around five years. If the mower stops repeatedly or won’t start, use a battery charger to see if it will provide the needed power. Otherwise, you may need to replace the battery. You can purchase a replacement battery from your local lawn equipment retailer.

Lawn Mower2. Gasoline Build-Up

After sitting for long periods of time, gasoline residue can build-up and clog the carburetor. Also, oxidized fuel can enter the float bowl and affect the operation of the mower. Try draining the old fuel from the float bowl and cleaning out the carburetor to see if it will work. You can also replace the carburetor and replace the stale fuel with new gasoline and a fuel stabilizer.

3. Spark Plug Issues

The spark plug may be loose, disconnected or dirty, so you will need to clean it and reconnect the component. If the spark plug is wet, the engine won’t be able to start, so check to see if it’s dry. If it’s dead, replace it and see if the engine starts.
