World Environment Day is celebrated on June fifth each year to bring awareness to the protection of our environment. Since its inception, this day has grown and developed into a global platform for raising awareness and taking action on urgent environmental issues. To shed some light on its global significance, popular garden center Glynn Young's Landscaping & Nursery Center has shared a helpful guide about how this day was born and how you can take part.

Garden Center’s Guide to World Environment Day

What Is the History?

World Environmental Day was started in 1974 by the United Nations to encourage awareness and action for environmental protection. Since its inception, it has developed into a global platform for public outreach, with 143 countries participating each year. Originally celebrated under the slogan “Only One Earth,” this day has gained popularity since its creation. What began as a day to voice concerns over ozone layer depletion has grown into a podium for addressing important causes, including marine pollution, global warming, overpopulation, and wildlife crime.

How Can You Celebrate?

This is a great time for us to recognize our impact on the world at large. There’s a number of ways each of us can champion and celebrate this cause right from our own backyards. Essentially, it’s about focusing on making the most of what you already have and avoiding unnecessary waste. Although it’s beneficial for everyone to do their part on this day, the goal is to focus on these behaviors all year long, not just in June.

Grow Your Own Food

Fuel your pile with good sources of carbon and nitrogen, including cardboard, dried leaves, newspaper, fruit and veggie waste, and lawn clippings.

Reduce Waste

Next, focus on reducing, reusing, and recycling. Cut down on items you don’t need, and avoid buying superfluous food that will go to waste. Then, focus on reusing what you have. For instance, give plastic bags a second life by using them to clean up after your doge. Additionally, make a point to recycle all newspapers, glass bottles, cans, and plastic containers so they can cycle back through the economy.
