When you’re setting up a home theater, you’re making a major investment in entertainment—so you want to get it right the first time. The projector you use can completely define the home movie experience. With such a wide range of possibilities to choose from, consider the following strategies to narrow down your selection.

How to Choose a Projector

1. Set a Budget

Before you even begin a home theater installation, have a budget in mind for the project and break it down into the different expenses you expect. This will give you a price range for the projector. Only look at ones in that price range, or you may end up overspending.

2. Measure the Room

Measure the expected distance from the lens to the screen and also measure the available screen size. Choose a projector with a throw ratio which fits the space. For example, if your screen space is ten feet wide, a projector with a throw ratio of two would need to sit 20 feet back, while a throw ratio of three needs 30 feet.

3. Consider Lighting

ProjectorThe brightness of the room also plays a role in the apparent brightness of the screen when the projector is on. The darker the room, the fewer lumens are necessary to make the image legible. If you can’t darken the home theater, you need a brighter projector, which is more expensive.

4. Understand the Technology

The two main types of projectors are Digital Light Processing (DLP) and Liquid Crystal Display (LCD). LCD projectors tend to be brighter and more compact, while DLP projectors are affordable and produce a sharp, smooth image.

5. Ask an Expert

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the number of choices or you aren’t sure which technical specifications best suit the home, it’s time to seek an expert opinion. A local home theater company can help you decide on the equipment that fits your needs.
