As part of gynecological care, many women have had surgeries or procedures done to improve their health or mitigate a potential problem. It can be nerve-racking, however, to hear that you’re going to need a procedure done. Fortunately, there are many minimally invasive surgeries that can be done in office, sending you home to recover right after. The expert team at Genessee Valley Obstetrics & Gynecology PC, in Rochester, NY, explains the most frequently performed OBGYN surgeries.

Most Common Gynecological Care Procedures You Should Know About

1. Dilation & Curettage

More commonly know as D&C, this is a surgery that’s usually done to treat a miscarriage, find the cause of abnormal bleeding, or look into infertility. The gynecologist will dilate the cervix and use a suction tool to remove fragments and tissues from the uterine. Women may experience cramping or bleeding afterward, but you can go home once it is complete as it’s an out-patient procedure.

2. Tubal Ligation

Gynecological CareFor women who no longer wish to carry children, this surgery closes the fallopian tubes so that pregnancy can’t happen again. It’s a fairly short procedure, and uses small instruments to clamp or burn off the tubes so that an egg can’t travel through them anymore. Women can opt to have this done anytime, but it’s popular to do right after giving birth. A swollen belly and some bleeding are common to experience a few days afterward.

3. Ovarian Cystectomy

Many women experience a painful ovarian cyst that may need to be removed before it ruptures, or if it’s at risk for becoming cancerous. A doctor will make an incision in the lower stomach and use a scope to remove the cyst without affecting the ovary. This is another fast procedure that allows you to go home right after. Cramping and bleeding are common side effects.

4. Hysterectomy

For women who have cervical cancer or are having trouble mitigating severe abdominal pain or heavy bleeding, a hysterectomy might be their best option for gynecological care. This is a minimally invasive surgery that uses a few small incisions in the abdomen. Patients can recover at home and experience very few complications following.
