Women have several options regarding birth control and family planning. With various methods available, it’s common for individuals to visit a women’s health center for input and advice from a trusted health care professional. If you’re considering birth control, here are four types to discuss with your doctor.

A Guide to Birth Control

1. Birth Control Pill

Birth ControlPills are a common and affordable option that contain a hormone that prevents ovulation. As such, by taking these pills each day, pregnancy will not occur, even if an egg and sperm come into contact. Birth control pills are 91% effective. Should you choose this method, you may enjoy additional benefits such as reducing hormonal acne, PMS, and iron deficiency. These pills do not protect against STDs, so it’s important for you and your partner get tested and wear condoms.

2. IUD

An IUD — or intrauterine device — is a small T-shaped piece of plastic or copper that’s inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. There are currently five different FDA-approved devices on the market — all of which can be removed. If you are sensitive to hormones, this is an excellent option as IUDs typically have little to no progestin. This device does not protect against STDs, but it is 99% effective in preventing pregnancy and can be used for five to 12 years.

3. Diaphragm

Diaphragms are soft silicone cups inserted into the vagina to cover the cervix during intercourse; as a result, you can avoid pregnancy. This method does not protect against STDs; however, it is 88% effective and is best when used with spermicide

4. Implant

Birth control implants is a small rod that’s inserted under the skin of a woman’s arm. It’s roughly the size of a matchstick, and once in place, it should not cause irritation. The implant slowly releases hormones into the body that ensure pregnancy does not take place. This method is 99% effective at preventing pregnancy and an ideal choice for women prone to forgetting to take a daily pill.
