If you’ve decided to pursue a career in health care, you have a great future ahead of you. As people in the United States live longer, the need for doctors and other practitioners will continue to grow, so your skills will be in high demand. As you begin looking into education and training opportunities and applying to get into medical school, there are a few do’s and don’ts to keep in mind when interviewing for admission.

Do:

Practice answering questions.

Write down potential queries you will be asked and come up with answers for them; this list can help you get started. After jotting down some thoughts, practice saying the responses aloud. If possible, have a friend or family member sit down and do mock interviews with you.

Review your applications.

The interviewers will bring up elements of your application, from the motivation letter describing why you chose a career in health care to any undergraduate coursework listed. Look over the paperwork beforehand, so you aren’t caught off guard and stay consistent.

Don't:

Assume all interviews are identical.

career in health careEach medical school is different, with its mission statement, specialty focus areas, and faculty members. Before interviewing for a school, review the unique elements that set it apart. Doing so will also remind you why you wanted to go there to start a career in health care in the first place.

Forget your body language.

The interview isn’t just about what is said—it’s also about how you say it. When you do mock interviews, practice in the mirror or ask the pretend interviewer to provide feedback on non-verbal cues. Maintain strong eye contact and avoid ticks like fidgeting hands that make you look nervous and unprofessional.
