You can always ask your dentist for toothbrush recommendations. If you’re in between appointments, however, and in need of a new toothbrush, there are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind. Following these tips will help you choose a toothbrush that feels comfortable and does its job effectively.

How to Choose the Right Toothbrush

1. Bigger isn’t Always Better

dentistToothbrushes come in all shapes and sizes, but bigger isn’t always better. The handle, regardless of length or thickness, should feel comfortable in your hand. The head of the brush should fit comfortably in your mouth and allow you to effectively brush all surfaces of your teeth, including the back of your molars. Larger brush heads can make it more difficult and even uncomfortable to maneuver.

2. Opt for Soft Bristles

Not all bristles are created equal. When buying your next toothbrush, pay attention to the hardness of the nylon bristles. Most are available in soft, medium, or hard textures and for most people, soft bristles are best. The other options may damage the tooth enamel and gums, particularly if you brush too hard, increasing your risk of tooth decay and gum disease.

3. Look for Seal of Approval

If you don’t have a recommendation from your dentist, look for toothbrushes with the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of approval. You can find this seal on manual and electric toothbrushes. It ensures the brush meets or exceeds safety standards and other requirements to effectively remove plaque and reduce the risk of cavities and gum disease.

4. Go With Your Preference

In the end, what matters most is your level of satisfaction. Regardless of whether you prefer manual or electric, or slim versus bulky, choose whatever makes you feel most comfortable. The better the toothbrush feels, the more likely you’ll be to brush twice per day as directed by your dentist.
