May is the designated month to raise awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. As a leading MRI facility serving Queens, NY, residents, Main Street Radiology regularly sheds light on this neurodegenerative disorder. While there is currently no cure for the disease, you can become an ALS advocate by learning more and taking action to support research initiatives.

What Is ALS?

ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that kills nerve cells, leading to weakened muscles. According to the ALS Association, the disease typically develops between the ages of 40 and 70, and roughly 20,000 people in the U.S. have it at any given time.

Often, the disease begins with limb weakness, slurred speech, or muscle twitching. Those who have it eventually lose control of the muscles they use for daily activities, like speaking, eating, and breathing. The prognosis is always fatal, and the average life expectancy is just two to five years.

What Causes the Disease?

Various genetic mutations can lead to ALS, but researchers are still working to pinpoint the precise cause of the condition. Most cases occur without any previous family history of the disease, with just a small percent inheriting the mutated gene. Mishandled proteins, chemical imbalances, and disorganized immune response are also thought to contribute.

What Can I Do to Help?

MRI Queens NYYou may recall the “Ice Bucket Challenge” which raised awareness for the disease in 2014 — and $115 million dollars — to further research efforts. The ALS Association has used funding to perform global research, but there is still more work to be done to find a cure. While donating to the ALS Association is one way to help, raising awareness for the illness is one of the most effective ways to gain widespread support, which can ultimately fuel the commitment to find a cure. Sharing information through social media channels and getting in touch with lawmakers to support legislation impacting the ALS community are also helpful ways to contribute.

As a leading MRI facility, Main Street Radiology is committed to providing resources to educate the community about serious illnesses such as ALS. Their state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging tools help to detect diseases, so patients can seek the best treatment options for their needs. If you require imaging services, call (718) 428-1500 to reach their Bayside or Flushing location, or visit their website to learn more about the MRI center.
