4 Ways to Protect Kids From Bugs at Summer Camp, Piermont, New Hampshire

Summer camp allows your child to experience loads of exciting new things. There are friends to make, activities to try, and new surroundings to discover. While exploring the great outdoors, however, your little one will also encounter irritating—and sometimes painful—insects. Take a look at a few smart safety tips below to protect them during their adventures this summer.

4 Bug Safety Tips for Summer Camp

1. Provide Insect Repellent

Pack plenty of insecticide in your little one’s summer camp bags. Pediatricians recommend kids use repellent with no more than 30% DEET. Teach them to spray exposed skin and clothes while avoiding inhaling any excess product.

2. Pack Long-Sleeved Clothes

Long-sleeved shirts and pants are great bug protection for nature-based activities like hiking and camping. Choose loose-fitting cotton clothes so kids can keep cool. Light-colored clothing is ideal, since this makes it easier to spy ticks.

3. Teach About Ticks

If it’s already bitten into the skin, they should tell a counselor. They will likely be sent to the infirmary for proper tick removal.

4. Pack an Antihistamine

If your child is old enough to be responsible for medication such as Benadryl®, send a pill or two along in their pack. Children can sometimes have unexpected reactions to bug bites—especially bee stings. An antihistamine will help control any potential allergic reactions and will allow time for proper treatment. Always advise your child to consult a camp counselor before taking any medication.
