The Arabic Origins of Algebra & Algorithm, Cambrian Park, California

Algebra is a fascinating mathematical tool, giving people the power to explain the natural world and solve problems that wouldn’t be possible without it. This area of mathematics was painstakingly developed by talented mathematicians from around the world, especially Arabic researchers working during the height of the Islamic empire. At Study Wizards Tutoring in San Jose, CA, our math tutors believe that understanding the history of mathematics can help students develop an appreciation for the subject and how the equations work.

The Arabic Foundations of Modern Algebra

While mathematicians in ancient Babylonia and Egypt had worked out quadratic equations and other complex algorithms, Arabic scholars of the 9th and 10th centuries were primarily inspired by the ancient Greeks. By combining the insights of Euclid with advancements made by Chinese and Indian researchers, their mathematicians laid the foundation for the Algebra used today.

Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi

A scholar living in Baghdad between 780 and 850 A.D., Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi is widely recognized as the father of modern mathematics. As a prolific author, he wrote several books, the most influential of which was “The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing”. Instead of focusing on solving a particular problem as previous scholars had done, al-Khwarizmi focused on describing the principles that math tutors still teach their students today. In fact, al-Khwarizmi’s name is the root of the modern word “algorithm,” used to describe a particular set of instructions, usually in computer applications.
