It is finally spring our fellow Mid-Missourians! After your recent spring pond cleaning your pond is no doubt sparkling clear. It can be frustrating to deal with a sudden algae bloom, or cloudy water. What follows are a few of Josiahs’ best tips to successfully keep your pond clear all season long.

#1 Rinse Filter Pads- Regularly. 

As with many things in life, a little bit a day goes a long way. Once or twice a week is the minimum number of times to rinse filter pads and empty skimmer baskets. Springtime demands that filters work overtime to filter the seedpods, flowers and pollen of blooming trees. Josiah recommends a high pressure hose nozzle to really blast them clean.

#2 Add your Additives           

Regular additions of beneficial bacteria are like probiotics for your pond, keeping the pond healthy and clear. If you are in need of a quick clear up, adding  a product called flocculant can produce immediate clarity. Flocculant causes the sediment to clump together and get trapped in filter pads. After adding the flocculant rinse the filter in the morning, afternoon, and evening. Your pond will be sparkling in no time.

#3 Add Aquatic Plants   

Adding plants gives the pond three advantages: extra filtration (from the roots of the plants) shade for the water ( making algae growth more difficult) and ornamental value. Some of our favorites are floating water lettuce, hyacinth and pickerel rush.

#4 Don’t Overfeed the Fish

The fish are finally active and eating again! We get great pleasure watching them pop up to the surface to suck in the pellets we toss in.

Make sure the food is high quality with natural ingredients that are fully digestible by the fish. Good quality fish food won’t add to the pollutants to your water.

#5 Enjoy your pond

These are the best way to keep your pond clear, but the best way to enjoy your pond is up to you. Barefoot, with a cup of coffee, with loved ones, or gazing thru a window while getting lost in thought. May your pond bring you many peaceful moments of pleasure while you enjoy the great outdoors.
