If you or someone in your family needs braces, it’s normal to have a lot of questions on the subject. Because of advancements in orthodontia, even those who had braces when they were younger have a lot to learn when their children get them. Below, the orthodontist at North Ft. Mitchell Dentistry in Covington, KY, answers some of the most frequently asked questions about braces.

FAQ on Getting Braces

Does Dental Insurance Cover Orthodontic Treatment?

Whether your insurance covers braces depends on the specifics of the policy. Many plans will cover orthodontic treatment for children, but they may not cover braces for adults if they are purely for cosmetic reasons. If your dental plan does not cover treatment, talk to your orthodontist about the estimated cost and any available payment plans.

At What Age Should Children Get Braces?

orthodontistThere is no set age at which a child should get braces. Instead, there are different phases of orthodontic treatment, and each applies in different scenarios. Phase I, for example, is often called “early intervention” and occurs before children have gotten all their permanent teeth, which is usually between the ages of seven and 10. Phase I aims to make minor skeletal corrections and prepare the mouth for phase II, or “active treatment.” Phase II can theoretically occur at any age but is most effective in younger patients, especially when treating complicated issues like underbites and severe crowding.

How Long Is the Standard Treatment?

Just as there is no standard age for getting braces, there is no set duration for wearing them. The total treatment time will depend on a variety of factors. In general, though, most children can expect to wear braces for one to three years. Adults, on the other hand, may require a longer treatment time because their skeletal system is less responsive to gradual modifications.

What Are the Major Benefits of Getting Braces?

Most people consider getting braces to improve their smile and boost their confidence, but correcting crowded or misaligned teeth has more than just cosmetic benefits. Depending on your current bite, orthodontic treatment can prevent tooth decay, gum disease, jaw problems, chewing challenges, and speaking difficulties.
