Oral health is a family affair. As a parent, it’s crucial to provide a stellar example for your kids and a strong foundation for a healthy life. In observation of Wellness Month this May, the dentists at Tkatch Dentistry in High Point, NC, offer four tips to keep the entire family smiling brightly.

4 Oral Health Tips From Your Family Dentist

1. Avoid High-Carb & Acidic Foods

Sugary and high-carb foods may be tasty, but they’re typically not healthy, especially for teeth. Sugar contributes to tooth decay and cavities so keep items like candy, sticky granola bars, and soda out of the house. Also, minimize consumption of acidic foods such as coffee, alcohol, vinegar, and citrus fruits. High-carb and acidic foods promote mouth bacteria that form acids and plaque, which eventually lead to decay.

2. Drink Plenty of Water

dentistWater is crucial for overall health. In addition to keeping you hydrated, it also boosts saliva production, which helps remove harmful bacteria and debris from the mouth. It also keeps the mouth moist, which reduces germs that cause bad breath and other conditions. As a general rule, drink six to eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day.

3. Eat Mouth-Healthy Foods

Food is the best source of vitamins and nutrients to keep the body healthy, including the mouth. Some foods, such as apples and celery, are natural teeth-cleaners. Keep plenty of these mouth-healthy foods on hand and feed them to your family during snack and meal times.

4. Use Fluoride

Fluoride is one of the best ways to prevent tooth decay. Family dentists offer a fluoride treatment as a standard part of routine cleanings, but you can also give your family treatments at home in-between visits. Use a fluoride-based toothpaste and mouthwash. You can also drink fluoride-enhanced water.

In addition to the above tips, visit the family dentist at least twice a year for checkups and cleanings. If you’re a Guilford County resident, trust the team at Tkatch Dentistry. They offer a broad range of preventative, restorative, and cosmetic dentistry services for kids and adults of all ages. Call (336) 889-9916 or visit their website to schedule an appointment.
