The Boscobel Story — First Gambler Deal

With the Great Depression in full swing by 1933, it was considered foolish to attempt opening a business. However, Jack and Blondy Curry of Boscobel, WI, saw an opportunity and took a chance.

In the depths of the Great Depression, over 25% of the country was unemployed and people had no money to spend on furniture or hardware. Jack, a former commercial airline pilot and pharmacist, had yet to find a career he was passionate about. His father — an owner-operator of a Gamble-Skogmo retail outlet in Prairie du Chien, WI — suggested that he give hardline retail a try. Jack gained experience at stores throughout Wisconsin and eventually opened his own store with Blondy in Boscobel. It was a modest 14 x 26 ft room that carried a variety of automotive supplies, and when it opened on March 11, 1933, it became the first Gamble-franchised dealership.

Jack tried several promotional offerings initially to kick-start his business, but found he faced the same challenges as other retailers who lacked the capital to resupply. This is where he separated himself. Jack began driving to his father’s store each night and taking from the back room inventory to restock his store. With this direct distributor connection, Jack was able to better connect with customers and establish his business in the community.

appliancesWorld War II brought new challenges to the hardlines industry, so Jack and Blondy expanded their product selection. This allowed Jack to fan out into the community to take part in civic affairs. Their son-in-law, Kempert Krogen later purchased the store in 1971. It remained a family business and went through several mergers over the years — joining with Our Own Hardware in 1986, changing to Krogen’s How To Store in 1990, and opening several new rental and product departments over the years. It was finally established as a part of the Do It Best Corporation in 2000 and remains a staple in the community.
