Puppies and kittens are a lot of fun, but there’s always the hurdle of house training to worry about. However, kitten and dog training can go smoothly if you are consistent and organized. The pet experts at JD Kennels in Royse City, TX, have the following tips to make this crucial task easier.

How to House Train Your Kitten or Cat

Fortunately, cats have a natural instinct for using a litter box. You will need to show them where it is, and make sure it is accessible to them at all times. The litter box should be in a semi-private location that is easy for you and your kitten to access, and far from feeding areas. Try a fine-grained, odor-free litter to start, then stick with it as long as it works with your cat. Changing litter types frequently can cause unwanted accidents.

Clumping litter can be scooped daily and replaced less frequently, in some cases only once every two weeks. Clean the box itself as needed using a mild detergent. With proper attention to the litter box, most cats will happily use it. If you have more than one cat, it’s a good idea to have multiple boxes.

How to House Train Your Puppy

Your pup can take days, months, and sometimes even a year to be reliably house trained. Dog training experts recommend you take your puppy out first thing in the morning, and then every hour if possible. Make sure that you go out after meals, naps, and whenever they will be left alone. Consider having a pet sitter come in to help with training if you have to be gone all day.

Try to go to the same spot when you go out. Smelling their scent will encourage them to go. Also incorporate rewards; give your puppy a treat when he goes outside successfully, and consider a short walk or play session, too. Conversely, don’t punish your pup when he makes a mess inside. Dogs won’t connect your anger to their actions, which makes it ineffective.

All cat and dog training takes consistency and patience, especially housebreaking. But the effort is worth it for the many happy years you will have with your pet. Call JD Kennels at (972) 636-9494 if you need help with cat or dog training, pet sitting, boarding, and more.
